The
Solly Malatsi Legacy (SML) Tournament, founded by Solly Malatsi—Minister of
Communication and Digital Technologies and Democratic Alliance Member of
Parliament—has grown into one of the most prestigious football tournaments in
Limpopo. Launched 10 years ago, the tournament continues to offer a platform
for young footballers to showcase their talent, particularly those from rural
areas with limited access to opportunities. Malatsi, who hails from the humble
streets of Ga-Dikgale, envisioned this tournament as a way to give back to the
community and enhance the development of football in underrepresented regions.
Attracting
teams from all walks of life, the SML Tournament has become a beacon of hope
for aspiring footballers. The recent Under-21 edition saw the participation of
esteemed guests such as Velile Mnyandu, a celebrated sports journalist with
over two decades of experience. Mnyandu has covered major sporting events,
including three FIFA World Cups, five Africa Cup of Nations finals, and two
Olympic Games. His in-depth reporting and passion for African football have
earned him accolades, including South African Sports Journalist of the Year
(2012) and Journalists' Journalist of the Year (2018). His presence at the SML
Tournament underscores the significance of the event in the South African
football landscape.
The
tournament has attracted notable figures in football, including former AmaZulu
and Kaizer Chiefs player Snu Mabiliso, now playing for Baroka FC, and Sinesipho
Mali, Bafana Bafana’s Head Tactical Analyst and Technical Scout. Their presence
as esteemed guests highlight the tournament’s growing reputation and their
commitment to supporting the development of young athletes in rural communities
